Cancer Warnings on Coffee Cups

Acrylmanide is a known carcinogen and byproduct of roasting coffee beans.

Now a Californian Court has mandated Starbucks put cancer warnings on its coffee sold in California because the company failed to show there was no significant risk from a carcinogen produced in the coffee roasting process.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle stated: "Defendants failed to satisfy their burden of proving by a preponderance of evidence that consumption of coffee confers a benefit to human health.”

Naturally the case has world wide ramifications.

Food Standards Australia says "While there’s no direct evidence that acrylamide can cause cancer in humans, there is evidence it can cause cancer in laboratory animals."

Starbucks have until 10 April 2018 to appeal.
